Kirsanov district is located in the North-East of Tambov region. The history of this area goes back to 1924. Quite curious are the historical twists and turns associated with the division of the district territory. In 1935, Penza region was formed which took over Umet and Gavrilovka districts that were the parts of Kirsanov district at that time. However, in 1938, Umet district reunited with Kirsanov district but only for a couple of years. Umet district was soon to become an independent one. The last transformation had finished by 1979 when a part of Kirsanov territory went to reestablished Gavrilovka district and since then the borders of Kirsanov district haven’t changed any more.

The Vorona river and its tributaries run across Kirsanov district. The Ramza lake is another water body of the area.
